What is the difference between Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is a type of cancer in the blood that develops in the lymphatic system due to a hematologic distortion.
This type of cancer can be classified into Hodgkin’s lymphoma or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Difference between Hodgkin’s and non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
A lymphoma is widely found among children of developing nations.
According to the National Institutions of Health of the United States, about 5% of cancer of lymphoma and less than 1% of cancer of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is found within all types of cancer in the USA.
The cause of lymphomas is unknown. The lymph nodes become inflamed leading to the formation of a lymphoma. This type of swelling does not cause pain in the patient.
This type of cancer affects the immune system which makes patients vulnerable to HIV, specific medications, or even to different types of lymphomas.
In a look at the different types of lymphoma cancer, Hodgkin’s disease or Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer originates from white blood cells called lymphocytes.
It takes its name from Thoma Hodgkin who described lymphomas in a publication in 1832.
Hodgkin lymphoma spreads the disease from one group of lymph to another group.
This disease also develops systemic symptoms as it progresses to another stage.
This disease is characterized by the presence of Sternberg cells (RS) is an examination by microscope.
Symptoms of Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Patients diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma may experience symptoms such as
- night sweats,
- unexpected weight loss,
- painless lymphomas found in the neck and shoulders,
- enlarged liver,
- pain after consuming alcohol,
- back pain,
- red areas on the skin.
- The patient may also experience fever.
People within the age range of 15 to 35 and more than 35 are the main ones to be affected with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Stages of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
The development of Hodgkin’s disease can be explained in four different stages.
- Affected region with a single lymph node.
- Two or more regions with lymph nodes on the same side of the diaphragm.
- Regions of lymph nodes on both sides of the diaphragm.
- When the final stage is reached, there will be one or more affected and infected organs.
In past decades, research and development of treatment for Hodgkin’s disease have taken many turns.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma was one of the first types of cancer that used radiation therapy, and a combination of chemotherapy for the first time with the advanced types of chemotherapy, the range of promising survival.
In a test done in Europe, it is shown that the patient has increased their survival range by 5% if the disease is detected in the initial stages, with a total of 98% being able to survive. While in the worst case you have an 85% chance of survival.
