Difference between Agriculture and Horticulture

Agriculture refers to the activity of planting crops to obtain other products or to use them as food.

It should be mentioned that this activity is large scale and includes other activities such as irrigation, work with animals, weeding and farming.

On the other hand, horticulture is a category within agriculture;

Therefore, it is a way of cultivating the land but on a much smaller scale.

Unlike agriculture, in horticulture, there is no need for hundreds of acres of land.

It is an activity that usually limits itself to the orchard or patio of the house.

Horticulture is important too, but it is more limited to the domestic and individual context.

What are the 4 types of horticulture?

The horticulture industry can be divided into three areas:

  • pomology
  • olericulture
  • ornamental
  • horticulture

Pomology is the planting, harvesting, storing, processing, and marketing of fruit and nut crops.

Olericulture refers to the planting, harvesting, storing, processing, and marketing of vegetable crops

Ornamental horticulture involves producing and use of woody and herbaceous plants.

It is often referred to as the “green industry.”

Ornamental horticulture is further divided into two categories.

Floriculture and landscape horticulture. Both involve using flowering and foliage plants.

Foliage plants are those used for their colorful greenery or leaves.

Floriculture is the area of ornamental horticulture associated with the use of potted plants, flowers, and bedding plants.

Finally, horticulture may include gardening, and caring for plants on a smaller scale is much cheaper than agriculture.
