Both bands and orchestras are musical ensembles and have their particular ways of performing on stage. There are many similarities between the two, but there are also differences.

Orchestra
Orchestras are older ensembles than bands. They usually have more members than the latter, since on average the orchestras have between 75 and 100 musicians; however, there are also small orchestras. If an orchestra has less than 50 members it is called “chamber orchestra”.
Another element that marks the difference between orchestras and bands is the type of music they play. Usually, orchestras play classical music and typical symphonies that are written for orchestras. In spite of everything, today it is fashionable among some to play symphonic versions of songs or popular music.
The instruments played in orchestras also differ greatly from those played in bands. In the orchestras we can find: violins, violas, cello, bass, trumpets, trombones, French horns, clarinets, oboes, flutes, military drums, cymbals, and other traditional instruments. Unlike bands, orchestras often play music in concert halls and theaters.
Band
On the other hand, bands are usually composed of two or more people; but not as many as in the case of orchestras. There are exceptional cases of bands composed by a single person (who plays the central role) while being accompanied by a small ensemble (who is usually only in charge of playing instruments or performing the chorus). The marching bands tend to be those with the most members.
Unlike orchestras, bands play a wide variety of music, especially popular music (rock, pop, jazz, metal, punk); for this reason, are usually preferred by young audiences. In addition, the instruments most used by the bands are the bass, guitar, drum, drums, keyboard, and piano … although there are some that include a great variety of instruments. Finally, there are bands that fill places larger than the concert halls; however, these tend to occur in less “formal” places.
