It refers to the religion that is based on the teachings of the Quran and whose main prophet is Muhammad. This word refers exclusively to religion and religious practices related to belief in Allah (God). This term is never used to refer to the people who practice them; therefore, it is possible to speak of Islamic community and art, but not of “Islamic people”.
On the other hand, the word Muslim is used to describe people who are followers of Islam, never to talk about religion itself. For example, one can say “the religion of the Muslims”, but not “Muslim” or “Muslim” as the name of religion. Finally, the correct way to use these two terms is “Islam” to refer to religion and “Muslim” when speaking of a follower of it.
