Since these symbols have become extremely common, many people see these two symbols very similar in their use and purpose. But in reality, there are many differences between them. Difference between TM and R Symbols
The symbol ™ means the word “trademark”. This word is given to products manufactured in the same way as if the copyright were given to the material. At the moment in which an author has a printed and published writing, he is automatically given “copyright” protection. In the case of a product manufactured as new, unique and presented in the market, it is given the “trademark” ™ symbol. By placing the trademark symbol next to the name of the product and the logo associated with the product, consumers are automatically warned that these products are the property of the company that manufactured the product. Anyone can use a “trademark” symbol when developing and manufacturing a particular product that they release to the market.
On the other hand, putting the symbol ® means that the name and logo of the product are registered trademarks. As the name implies, the registered trademark is located next to the name and logo of the product that has been registered by the company in the trademark office within the city or country where it was manufactured. To ensure that the name of a product and logo remain as registered trademarks, its registration must be renewed every year with the duration of the time depending on the regulations of the trademark office in which it was registered.
The names and logos that carry the ® symbol enjoy legal protection against trademark infringement compared to those that carry only the ™ symbol. Because the company can register these products, other companies can no longer use these names and logos. On the other hand, companies that simply append the trademark symbol in addition to the logo and product name could not sue for violation of rights against other companies that use the same name and logo. Although it may be more tedious to register the brand, in the long term it is more beneficial for the company.
