Refugee
The word refugee refers to the person seeking shelter in a country that is not his or her country due to fear of being persecuted for religious reasons, war, “race” or nationality. There are also other reasons why some people enter a country that is not their own in search of shelter, for example, could be due to natural disasters and political violence in their countries of origin.
Refugees cannot themselves endorse the protection of another country, but in order for them to be relocated in a safer place, it is the other countries (especially the border countries) that must wish to provide them with the things they need.
Asylum
On the other hand, the term asylum refers to a person who cannot return to their country of origin for fear of being persecuted; but in this case that person had to have applied for asylum in the country in which he is and that is not his.
Cases of political asylum are common, as persecutions are usually of this type; although cases of religious, racist or group persecution are also frequent. In addition, due to differences of opinion some individuals have been persecuted throughout history and have been obliged to apply for asylum. Finally, asylum is often requested by one or a few people at the same time; however, when it comes to refugees, groups can be very large; even thousands of people.
