What is a Pump?

A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps. Pumps operate by some mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary) and consume energy to perform mechanical work moving the fluid.

Pumping systems are also used in domestic and residential applications such as: circulating hot water in central heating systems, pumping water from wells, providing water pressure in taps and showers, and removing sewage from buildings.

What is a Motor?

A motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The reverse process, producing electrical energy from mechanical energy, is done by a generator or dynamo. Motors are used in a wide variety of applications, including fans, pumps, compressors, and conveyors.

  • Electric motors can be powered by either direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC), and the vast majority of motors in use today are AC motors. How do electric motors work? In a DC motor, an electric current flows through a coil that creates a magnetic field.
  • This field interacts with another magnetic field to create torque, which turns the armature and shaft of the motor. In an AC motor, an electromagnetic field is produced that reverses direction with each cycle of the AC power supply.
  • This reversing field interact with the field generated by the armature winding to create a torque that rotates the armature. Whether it’s a DC motor or an AC motor, electric motors operate on the principle of electromagnetism to generate mechanical power.

Difference between Pump and Motor
