Promise vs. Commitment

Difference between Promise and Commitment: – Many people are confused with the terms “promise” and “commitment,” and such confusion is manifested at the moment of not knowing when a statement can be referred to as a commitment and when as a promise.

Although there is a close relationship between both concepts, the truth is that they are different things. If you also have doubts about it or just want a little more information, keep reading, because then we explain to you the difference between commitment and promise.

Difference between Promise and Commitment

Promise
When you promise something, you make a statement or make sure that you are going to do something in particular or that it will cause something to happen. Promises are made to other individuals or groups of them.

It is quite common to make promises and to do them to us, but nothing more than a moral duty or the pleasure to be considered as “people of word” can push us to fulfill them or that others fulfill theirs for us.

Depending on the context, there are promises that are not made seriously and all parties involved are aware of it, however, other times more serious promises are made and with the intention of fulfilling them; although at the moment there is no means to make them come true.

A typical example of promise is: “I promise that someday my parents will be proud of me.” This statement indicates that the person who has made the promise will do something in particular to achieve his goal, although in the end he may do nothing and not fulfill what he has promised.

Commitment
On the other hand, unlike the promises, the commitments are characterized by being more concrete and because in some cases; when they are not fulfilled, can lead to various punishments (usually minor)

The commitment specifically includes carrying out the necessary actions to fulfill the promises that are made, therefore, the one who acquires commitments has to work and act according to what he has committed.

Because commitments are usually far more serious than promises, sometimes it is not easy to get rid of them. A typical example of commitment is the groom who tells his fiance that he is going to marry her when he chooses. In this case, if the boyfriend ever changed his mind, he could be considered as someone without a word or even as a bad person, depending on the context of the situation.

Finally, it can be said that the promises become reality or are fulfilled when they are assumed as commitments. On their own, the promises are easily carried away by the wind; but the commitments assumed are more likely to be met.
