In 2006, Intel launched the Core brand, which represented a major redesign of the Pentium series’ architecture to address shortcomings noted with the NetBurst microarchitecture.

What is Centrino?

  • Centrino is a brand name of Intel Corporation which represents its wireless computer technology. Centrino includes a collection of several communications and computer technologies, including a central processing unit (CPU), chipsets, a wireless network interface card (NIC), and corresponding drivers and software. Centrino-based computers are designed to be smaller, lighter, and consume less power than traditional laptops.
  • The Centrino platform was initially released in March 2003. Centrino 2 was released in June 2008, Centrino 2 with vPro in September 2008, and Centrino Wireless-N 1000 in January 2010. Centrino is based on the 802.11 standards for Wi-Fi networking.
  • It is sometimes referred to as Wi-Fi Certified. Centrino delivers up to 54 Mbps data rates in theory, with real-world throughput usually around half that number due to various factors such as interference from other devices using the same spectrum. Centrino can also connect to other types of networks, including Ethernet and cellular networks. One advantage of Centrino over competing technologies is its use of multiple antennas to communicate with multiple access points simultaneously, which can result in better performance and range.

Difference between Pentium and Centrino
