Modern vs Contemporary Art

Difference between Modern and Contemporary Art: – In art, modern and contemporary forms are largely interchangeable. People often use the term “modern” to describe an art form of late, when in fact, this form of art is considered contemporary.

Modern and contemporary art emerge in two different moments. Modern art refers to the period that began in the 1880’s and lasted until the 1960’s. On the other hand, contemporary art can be said to have developed after the 1960’s and is the one that is maintained until the moment. Anyhow, below this post is all about the difference between modern and contemporary art.

Difference between Modern and Contemporary Art

Modern Art

Artists like Van Gogh and Manet considered themselves as revolutionaries of art in the 1880’s, since they gave a new twist to the form of artistic expression that was realized until then. Modern art was separated from the conventional forms of art. They emphasized the subjective representation of subjects instead of focusing on the realism that prevailed before the 1880’s.

Modern art has a unique style and reflects both the inner and outer world of the human being. It focused on surrealism rather than life represented according to the perception of the church or society.

Contemporary Art

Contemporary art is one created by artists who in many cases still live. Important social, political and cultural reforms were observed throughout the world at the end of 1900; which greatly influenced this art form. There is no conventional-ism or rigid system in contemporary art, but some works can be seen influences of modern art. Each issue of relevant importance such as globalization, global warming, human rights, destruction of the environment, are reflected in the contemporary arts.

Unlike modern art, contemporary art has more social impact; tends more to the reaction of the public, although this reaction is not always positive. On the other hand, contemporary artists have more freedom to experiment with all styles.

Modern artists had as their ideal pure art, while contemporary artists are very liberal in their attitudes and are not too affected by purity in art.
