This martial art originated in South Korea. Originally practiced as a military art form, it was generally practiced for self-defense.

It is also one of the most famous modern combat sports and practiced in almost all the world. Its origin dates back to about 2,000 years ago and is said to have arisen during the Age of Three Rival Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekjae and Silla) from 37 BC-668 AD.

The training of this discipline is associated with unarmed combat techniques that serve to develop strength, speed and survival skills. For this reason, the word Taekwondo can be translated as “the way of hands and feet” or “the art of unarmed combat.”

Tae = “foot” (kicks).

Kwon = “with the fist”.

Do = how to do. Path of perfection.

As has been said, Taekwondo is a famous fighting sport and a martial art form. He is known for his kicking techniques. L as legs play a vital role in the actions and attacks.

Those who practice this type of combat usually have long and strong legs, since these are the ones that act as weapons at the time of the attack.

Taekwondo is known to develop strength, speed, balance, flexibility and endurance in those who practice it. The traditional one is usually based on the rules that were established in the 1950s and 1960s in the South Korean army. It is also practiced in various civil organizations, including schools and universities.

Karate
Karate is also a form of martial art. It originated in Japan, more than 2,000 years ago; in the Ryukyu Islands, now known as Okinawa Island.

The basic principles of Karate are based on improving and benefiting health and making the body strong and hard as a rock to defeat the opponent in a single blow.

It is also called karate-do, which means “the way of the empty hand.” The term is a combination of the following characters:

Kara = empty

Your hand

Do = path

Generally, those who practice karate do not usually attack first; but wait for the attack of the opponent to respond in the right way and to know the weaknesses of the same. In this martial art, kicks, punches, knee blows, elbows and open hand techniques are used.

A series of “katas” (postures) are used that can be offensive or defensive and focus the energies to give blows of high impact.

Key differences between Karate and Taekwondo

  • Taekwondo is a form of martial art of South Korea, while Karate is a Japanese martial art.
  • Karate consists of techniques of strong impact: punches, kicks, blows with open hand … and different locking techniques; while Taekwondo focuses on the use of the legs.
  • In Karate movements are usually linear and hard, whereas in Taekwondo they are usually very fast, strong and non-linear.
  • Karate is not included in the Olympic Games, while Taekwondo is.
