On September 1st of 2010, iTunes 10 was released as an update to iTunes 9. There are many changes between these two versions of iTunes; this blog post will outline some key differences between them.

What is iTunes 9?

iTunes is a media player, media library, online radio broadcaster, and mobile device management application developed by Apple Inc. It is used to play, download, and organize digital downloads of music and video (as well as other types of media available on the iTunes Store) on personal computers running the macOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems. The iTunes Store is also available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. iTunes was first released on January 9, 2001, for Mac OS 9. iTunes 9 was released on September 9th, 2009. iTunes 9 featured some interface changes, as well as Genius Mixes and Ping.

Interface changes included a new grid view for the Library that displayed album covers in a scrollable grid instead of a traditional list view with accompanying album artwork. iTunes 9 also introduces “Genius Mixes”, which are auto-generated playlists based on criteria such as song genre and artist popularity. iTunes 9 also introduced Ping. Ping is a social network for music discovery within iTunes 9. With Ping, you could follow your favorite artists and friends to see what music they were downloading and sharing. iTunes 9 was available as a free download from the iTunes website. What is iTunes 10?

iTunes 10 is the latest version of iTunes, a media player and media library application developed by Apple. iTunes 10 was released on September 1, 2010, and includes a number of new features, such as support for the Ping social network and iTunes LP. iTunes 10 also includes a new logo and an updated interface. iTunes 10 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 or later and Windows 7 or later.

Difference between iTunes 9 and 10

iTunes 9 was released on September 1, 2009, and iTunes 10 was released on January 11, 2011. iTunes 9 included support for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch (3rd generation), while iTunes 10 added support for the iPad. Both versions of iTunes include the ability to manage and sync music, videos, and books with an iOS device. iTunes 9 also introduced the Genius feature, which creates playlists of similar songs based on an initial song selection. iTunes 10 added Ping, a social networking service for music lovers that allows users to follow artists and friends and see what they are listening to. iTunes 9 had a white icon with a blue musical note, while iTunes 10 has a blue icon with a white musical note. Overall, iTunes 10 is a more recent and revised version of iTunes that includes additional features not found in iTunes 9.


iTunes 10 was released on September 13, 2010. It is a free download and is available for Mac and Windows computers.
