Hobbies vs. Interests

Difference between Hobbies and Interests: – We all have our tastes and enjoy doing certain things more than others, that are part of life, and when we do what we want or we can spend time to what we like we feel happier.

On this occasion we will clarify the difference between two concepts related to the topic that we have introduced and that are often (too often) confused or used in an indistinct way: interests and hobbies.

Difference between Hobbies and Interests

Interests
A person’s interests depend on the feelings that certain things arouse. When someone is interested in something, concentrate all your attention and curiosity on that.

Precisely attention is the keyword when interest is concerned. It is impossible to have interest in something that is not given due attention. The opposite of feeling interested in something or someone is to feel indifferent.

For example, we can say “Mariana is interested in poetry” to express that person likes to read, write or look for information related to poetry. Also, we could say “Miguel is interested in video games”.

Hobbies
Unlike interests, hobbies are not only things that grab our attention, but have to do with activities that we do. When we have a hobby we engage in concrete and fairly practical actions, while when it comes to an interest we can be more passive.

Hobbies are activities that we enjoy doing in our free time and have a recreational purpose. Usually, we work our hobbies in a systematic way; that is, we follow certain routines. Whenever you have a hobby you have an interest, but not always that we are interested in something we develop a hobbies. For example, someone might be interested in diving without even knowing how to swim.
