Herbivores and Carnivores

What is difference between Herbivores and Carnivores? As in plants, animals need a constant supply of energy so that their bodily functions work properly and survive. But because animals cannot create their own food, like plants, they need to have a constant supply of food through the consumption of certain types of food that supply their needs. In the animal kingdom, there are two large groups of animals: herbivores and carnivores. Below this post is all about the difference between Herbivores and Carnivores.

Difference between Herbivores and Carnivores

We all learned that the differences between herbivores and carnivores are in the type of food they eat. The herbivores refer to those animals that consume only plants. This includes larvae, grains and seeds.

To determine if a particular animal is an herbivore or a carnivore is not limited to observing what type of food it eats. In fact, paleontologists have been able to determine that a particular fossilized animal was herbivorous or carnivorous simply by looking at the remains of its fossilized skeleton. The most obvious is the denture. Herbivores are animals that have large, flat canines that are shaped like swords and that are short. This allows them to trap the fibers found in the plants and crushes the seeds and grains consumed during their life. On the other hand, carnivores have pointy, short canines and long, sharp incisors. This allows them to tear the skin, muscles and ligaments to help chew the meat that comes from their prey.

Another difference is the nails found in the skeletons. Herbivores have flat claws or sharp claws. Carnivores have sharp jaws. The difference in the nails is in the type of food they consumed. Because carnivores need to take their prey to consume their meat, their jaws help them inflict as much damage as possible to leave their prey with no chance.

In line with this, there is a very large difference in the size of the radius of the snout opening of carnivores and herbivores. Because herbivores eat only plants, grains and seeds, the opening of their son is small compared to the size of their head. On the other hand, carnivores have larger openings compared to the size of their heads. This is because carnivores do not just use their mouths to eat. In fact, most carnivores use their sharp teeth when they attack their prey to take it and consume it.

In Summary:

  • Herbivores are animals that consume only plant products. Carnivores are animals that consume the flesh and skin of other animals.
  • Carnivores have incisors and canines to help pull the flesh of their prey. Herbivores have flat canines and shaped swords and short incisors to help them grab leaves, seeds and grains from plants.
  • The herbivores use only their mouths for food consumption which is why they have the opening of their snout of small size. Carnivores use their teeth as a weapon, making it necessary for the opening of their mouth to be much larger than the size of their head.
