Difference between Geology and Petrology: – Geology and petrology are two different types of earth science.
Earth Science, just as its name suggests, is concerned with the study of the composition and structure of the earth.
Similarly, Geology is the scientific research of the structure and composition of the soil,
whereas petrology is a branch of earth science that deals with research related to the structure and composition of rocks.

Geology
The scientific study of the entire earth is known as geology.
This study includes the history, formulation, structure, physical properties, processes that occur in it.
So, the persons associated with the research and study of geology are call geologists.
Geology also belongs to the field of soil science, which means that they also need to consider the physical structure and substance of the soil, the processes which create and act on it, and its history.
Other subjects that come under this field are the historical past of life, plate tectonics, and previous climates are a few of the key areas in geology.
Geological information is useful for mineral and hydrocarbon pursuit, analysis of water resources,
Understanding of natural problems (e. g. volcanos, landslides), and solution of environmental problems.
Most of the geological information comes from the study of different materials available on the surface of the earth and underground, including rocks and unconsolidated material.
Petrology
Branch of geology that concentrates on the study of rocks and mountains – the origins, structure, composition, and structure of rocks is known as petrology.
Petrology has three sub-branches according to the three main types of rocks:
- igneous,
- metamorphic,
- sedimentary.
The field of petrology typically uses other related domains such as mineralogy, optic mineralogy, petrography, and substance analysis to analyze the composition of stones.
Geochemistry and Geophysics are two other modern fields for petrological studies.
Petrology can help us learn a lot of things about different types of rocks.
The composition of rocks provides us a lot of important information about the composition of the Earth’s crust.
The age of rocks can help scientists to put together the whole-time series of geological events.
Researchers also gain information about tectonic plates and processes by learning the structure and division of rocks.
