Geology vs. Petrology
Difference between Geology and Petrology: – Geology and petrology are two different types of earth science. Earth Science, just as its name suggests, is concerned with the study of composition and structure of the earth. Similarly, Geology is the scientific research of the structure and composition of the soil whereas petrology is a branch of earth science that deals with the research related to structure and composition of rocks. This is the key difference between geology and petrology.
Scientific study of the entire earth is known as geology. This study includes the history, formulation, structure, physical properties, and processes that occur in it. So, the persons associated with the research and study of the geology are call geologist. Geology also belongs to the field of soil science. This ultimately means that they also need to consider the physical structure and substance of the soil, the processes which create and act on it and its history. Other subjects that come under this field are the historical past of life, plate tectonics, and previous climates are a few of the key areas in geology.
Geological information is useful for mineral and hydrocarbon pursuit, analysis of water resources, understanding of natural problems (e. g. volcanos, landslides), and solution of environmental problems. Most of the geological information comes from the study of different materials available on the surface of earth and underground, including rocks and unconsolidated material.
Branch of geology that concentrates on the study rocks and mountains – the origins, structure, composition, and structure of rocks is known as petrology. Petrology has three sub-branches according to the three main types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The field of petrology typically uses other related domains such as mineralogy, optic mineralogy, petrography, and substance analysis to analyze the composition of stones. Geochemistry and Geophysics are two other modern fields that can be used for petrological studies.
Petrology can help us learn a lot of things about different types of rocks. The composition of rocks provides us a lot of important information about the composition of the Earth’s crust. The age of rocks can help scientists to put together the whole-time series of geological events. Researchers also gain information about tectonic plates and processes by learning the structure and division of rocks.
Difference between Geology and Petrology
Geology: Geology is the scientific study of the physical structure of the earth.
Petrology: Petrology is the study of the origins, composition, structure, and distribution of rocks.
Geology: Geology is a sub-field of Earth Science Department.
Petrology: Petrology is a branch of Geology.
Geology: Geologists gather data from rocks as well as other material that are known to human beings.
Petrology: Petrology is related to rocks and the information that may be gathered from them.
Geology: There are many branches in geology including mineralogy, geomorphology, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, paleogeography, and many others.
Petrology: There are 3 main branches in petrology which correspond to the types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.
