Difference between Fruits and Vegetables

Many fruits and vegetables are well known by us, but there are some that we find difficult to classify. What would you say are avocados, olives and tomatoes? Fruits or vegetables? If you want to know the difference between Fruits and Vegetables, continue reading.

Fruits
Fruits are nothing more than mature ovaries that result from plant seeds. They usually develop from flowers, but can also develop from some type of plant tissue; such as bananas. Fruits have seeds and play an important role in the reproductive cycle of plants. Generally, fruits are sweet and fleshy and contain seeds inside, although some of them have seeds on the outside.

Examples of fruits that many people believe are vegetables:

  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Avocados
  • Chiles
  • Pumpkins or Auyamas and Courgettes
  • Olivas
  • Potatoes and sweet potatoes, among others

In addition, apples, aubergines, rose hips, and corn kernels are fruits.

Vegetables
Vegetables, on the other hand, are plants or parts thereof that are edible and do not necessarily play a role in the reproductive cycle. Vegetables have no seeds and are not usually sweet and fleshy like fruits. People regularly classify different vegetable flavors; some are considered sweet, others tart, bitter or salty. Also, vegetables usually contain fewer calories than fruits (because they usually have less sugar).

Examples of vegetables we all know are:

  • Lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Cauliflower

Finally, both fruits and vegetables are recommended for a healthy diet; but if you want to lose weight the best option is vegetables because as we said, they contain less sugar; although there are exceptional cases like beets that have a large amount of this.
