Flying vs. Levitating
Flying and levitating are two different words with different meanings, but which have a certain relationship for which they are often used as if they are interchangeable; which is a mistake.
Although both verbs denote some kind of movement in the air, the implications of these two terms are completely different; which is why they should never be used in the same context as if they were synonymous words.

Fly
Flying involves passing, floating, moving or rising in the air. It is something that birds, planes and of course, Superman does. Think for a moment how all these things can fly.
They have a purpose, a direction and a form of control over their movements that allows them to do that (except for Superman, who is a fictional character).
The ability to fly is something that occurs naturally as in the case of birds and many insects,
or is achieved by means of a power source (for example, the engines or turbines of an airplane).
To levitate
On the other hand, levitation is when a person rises in the air at a short distance from the ground. The person could well elevate himself or someone else, or even elevate an object.
Scientifically speaking, there are several methods that can be used for levitating, such as:
- aerodynamics,
- magnetism,
- acoustics,
- electrostatics,
- electromagnetism,
- optical levitation methods; among others.
However, what comes to the minds of most people when they hear this word is the form of levitation consisting of a magic trick or a paranormal activity.
Finally, as a trick of magic, the magician acts as if he were actually rising from the ground or as if he were raising his assistant or volunteer; when in fact there is a whole process that is followed in order to create this illusion.
As for the relationship with paranormal activity, there is no evidence so far as to suggest that this phenomenon is true.
