Content of Equal and Splenda

  • Equal: derives its sweetness mainly from aspartame, but also uses dextrose and maltodextrin. Aspartame is two hundred times sweeter than sugar compared to gram per gram. At the same time, it has a negligible caloric content.
  • Splenda: it is based on sucralose, one of the chemical components of sugar. However, sucralose on its own account contains approximately three calories per gram and therefore, it is also marketed as a non-caloric sweetener.

Uses of Equal and Splenda

  • Equal: is most often used to sweeten beverages such as coffee, tea, lemonade and even diet sodas. Its shape is not granular like sugar and can often be bitterer if it is exposed to high cooking heat. While you can buy it in bulk, packages, such as those found on restaurant tables, are more common.
  • Splenda: it is also used as a beverage sweetener. However, it can be made granular with the addition of maltodextrin and dextrose and will then be cup per cup as sugar. It is often used in a 3: 1 baking mix and most people say that they cannot tell the difference.

Controversies of Equal and Splenda

  • Equal, has met with resistance since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 1974. People were worried that it could cause cancer. However, numerous studies have shown that in small amounts (in a cup of coffee, for example) the amount of aspartame ingested is not harmful. It is now approved as an artificial sweetener by more than ninety countries of the world.
  • Splenda has also raised concerns about its safety, namely because a small portion of sucralose is indigestible. However, if it is taken in studies of reasonable amounts it has been shown that it does not do any harm. More controversy has increased in Splenda advertising that is to say for its rival, Equal. As Splenda’s profits soared to more than four times more than Equal, Equal raised a claim about Splenda’s use of the word sugar in its advertising. Finally, a judicial settlement was reached.
