What is Comet?

The most famous comet is probably Halley’s Comet, which can be seen from Earth every 75-76 years. Comets can be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. If one were to hit Earth, it could cause widespread damage or even destroy all life on our planet. Fortunately, this is very unlikely to happen.

What is Asteroid?

Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Although they are often called “minor planets,” Asteroids differ from true planets in several important ways. First, Asteroids are much smaller than planets. Second, Asteroids orbit the Sun in a region between Mars and Jupiter, whereas planets orbit the Sun in a much wider range of distances. Finally, Asteroids do not have the internal energy sources that allow planets to maintain their round shape. Asteroids vary widely in size, with some Asteroids measuring only a few kilometers across and others reaching diameters of over 1000 kilometers. The largest asteroid is Ceres, which has a diameter of about 940 kilometers. Although Asteroids are small and lack many of the features of planets, they are nonetheless an important part of our solar system. Asteroids are believed to be leftover debris from the formation of the solar system, and they provide scientists with valuable information about the early history of our solar system. Additionally, some Asteroids contain valuable resources such as water or minerals, making them potential targets for future mining missions.

Difference between Comets and Asteroids

Comets and asteroids are both small celestial bodies that orbit the sun. Comets are made of ice and dust, and as they approach the sun, the heat vaporizes the ice, creating a distinctive tail. Finally, comets typically travel much faster than asteroids; for example, comet ISON was traveling at around 148,000 kilometers per hour when it passed through the asteroid belt in 2013!


Comets and asteroids are both made of rocks, dust, and ice. However, comets have a more volatile composition because they contain frozen gas and dust. When a comet nears the sun, the heat vaporizes the gas and dust, creating a tail that points away from the sun. Asteroids are less likely to form tails because they don’t have as much volatile material.
