For people who do not follow any manga or anime, it can sometimes be confusing what is the difference between anime and manga as both were introduced at about the same time and have Japan as their country of origin.

Difference between Anime and Manga

The anime and manga refer to Japanese cartoons and comics respectively. Basically, the word anime in Japanese refers to animated series; while the Japanese word manga refers to comics or comics in the general sense.

Anime
Since anime is the type of Japanese animation, it is usually animated by computers. Originally, many of the Animes we know were previously hand-drawn cartoons or sleeves; but with the increasing use of technology, it is nowadays very common for such comics to come back animations through the use of computers.

The anime includes animated television series, movies and short films. As you can imagine, the word “anime” has been derived from “animation”. This type of animation is often associated with colorful graphics, fantastic themes and vibrant characters; often complex. The first Japanese animation dates back to 1917, but became famous outside of Japan in the 1980’s. The anime is especially aimed at teenagers and young adults, as story lines and the whole story is usually much more mature than any other animated cartoon. However, with the growing popularity of this genre, some are also being developed that are directly intended for children.

The characters of the anime are drawn to the most realistic proportions possible, but the current anime has made more emphasis on the eyes and has put them bigger than they were at first. The anime is also considered more violent and realistic compared to the typical cartoons. In addition, it usually deals with various issues that are not suitable for the youngest.

Manga
As previously mentioned, Manga is the Japanese word for comics or comics in the general sense; that is, both those created in Japan and those created outside. However, given the growing popularity, it now refers exclusively to comic books made or originating in Japan. Mangas are usually written in Japanese, but many of them are quickly translated into other languages, for fans who do not understand Japanese.

The word manga came into use during the eighteenth century and became increasingly popular thanks to works such as ” Shiji no yukikai ” by Santō Kyōden (1798) and “Hyakujo “by Aikawa Minwa (1814). Later the sleeve became popular in the western countries, after the First World War, thanks to sleeves like “Astroboy” of Osamu Tezuka.

The manga is not aimed at a particular audience, but there is manga for both children and adults. It covers a wide range of genres, including action, romance, adventure, sports, games, drama, historical, comedy and science fiction. Many manga comics are published in black and white, but there are also they are published in color. It all depends on the person writing the manga.

It does not necessarily have to be part of a company known for great publications; manga can also be written and shared by its individual owners. The stories of the manga come in series format, which means that they are presenting a series of themes in which they are involved and solve several conflicts, but in the end all the themes are connected to each other.

The characters of the manga are very similar to those of the anime, with realistic characteristics; but instead of big eyes like in the anime, in the manga the eyes are usually more realistic and the nose and mouth are drawn small. The format of the paper on which the manga is written is similar to that of the western comics, but in the arguments of manga are usually addressed more realistic issues like death, violence and hate.

Finally, the differences between anime and manga are usually very minimal. While anime is an animated series with moving images, the manga is a graphic comic that uses images and a plot to tell a story. In the case of anime, this is not limited to being drawn by hand; although many animators continue to make the original stories at hand. On the other hand, the sleeve has to be drawn by hand and cannot be computerized.

The production of the anime requires a lot of time and budget, while manga can be particularly economical to do. The anime requires high-end production mechanisms, such as software, personal computers, artists, computer animators, cleaning equipment … The manga can usually do even a single person, the author, who is known as maganka and is who write the main story.

The stories of the anime are usually quite short compared to the manga, which can be carried out even for years; except for some exceptions like Naruto and Bleach that are original anime manga and have been running for years.
